Ansie Selier the
‘Granny of Granny’s’
was present at the show and told us the story behind Granny’s. It in
fact started 30 years ago when Ansie had her first daughter, her child
was very allergic and after feeding her an off the shelf product one
evening, she had to rush her daughter to hospital, she was admitted to
intensive care for treatment of the reaction. That was when Ansie
started to make her own baby food with no preservatives. This was used
for all her children. Friends, family and neighbours all asked her to
make food for them, as babies loved the food.
In 2004 Ansie’s grandson was born,
and while preparing food for him she decided it was time to realize her
dream. To make
Granny’s
frozen baby food’ available to
all the babies in South Africa.
Two years of laying the
foundations to the launching of the product took lots of research,
testing and conforming to the necessary statutory requirements.
Granny’s
was officially
launched in January 2006. The Spar Group, Northern and Southern
Division have stores which stock the product and distribution is
expanding as we speak. Royal Setshaba Catering will be distributing to
Westville and Crompton hospitals in Natal.
We are also proud to say that a
number of Clinics and Pediatricians recommend our product to mom’s. We
are in fact also distributing to hospitals direct, for them to use for
pediatric patients as well as others e.g. ICU soft foods, for the aged
who can’t eat normally, for oncology patients for tubing at hospital and
at home. We have held product introduction meetings with several
dieticians for two hospital groups, who have also expressed extreme
interest and pleasure in the fact that such a product in now available
for moms.
Granny’s Care for Children,
and as a company we sow seed back into the community.
Granny’s
sponsor ABBA House, a home for babies in need in Pretoria, they in turn
pass on to homes in Shoshonguve and others. We also support Ledsedi
House in Melody, Hartbeesport Dam, which is a home for AIDS babies.
It is wonderful to see how the
babies respond to eating
Granny’s,
not only do they clap hands when they see us dropping off food, but
their development also has improved vastly.
Granny’s
would also be most beneficial for AIDS suffers especially those who have
already developed problems with eating and mouth soars etc.
Granny’s
is wonderful for
the aged in frail care centres, there are many who cannot chew or
swallow large bits of food anymore.
Notes for
Moms
Before they are 3 to 4 months old,
babies automatically push out their tongues when anything enters their
mouths. This reaction, call the extrusion reflex, is essential for
breast-feeding and bottle-feeding, and indicates that infants can
swallow only liquids. Even after losing the extrusion reflex, babies
may lack the coordination to move food from the front of their mouths to
the back for swallowing. They start to develop that ability between 4
to 6 months of age. That is also when they start sitting with support
and holding up their heads.
Is your
baby ready? If your 4 month old needs more frequent
breast-feedings or gets hungry between bottles of formula, it may be
time to experiment with the first sold food. Start with a teaspoon.
Signs that your baby is ready to go forward with solid food include:
-
Watching the food on a spoon and
opening his or her mouth to receive it.
-
Closing his or her lips over the
spoon
-
Keeping most of the food in his
or her mouth and then swallowing it.
Whether your baby is 4,5 or 6
months old when he or she first eats cereal, one thing you should not do
is introduce it by mixing it in a bottle. Even if the cereal barely
thickens the milk or formula, swallowing it requires different reflexes
from swallowing liquid. A baby who has not had any practice swallowing
solids may gag on clumps of cereal from the bottle and risk inhaling
(aspirating) some of it. A less frightening but still undesirable
effect is overfeeding - cereal adds unneeded calories to formula milk.
Six
important “Start Healthy” tips
- Breastfeeding: Establish healthy
eating habits from the very beginning.
- Positive Parenting: Healthy
eating starts with a positive parent-child partnership.
- Patience: If he rejects a new
food ….. try, try and try again
- Variety : Build you baby’s taste
buds.
- 5-a-day: Nutritionists recommend
5 servings of fruits and vegetables a day.
- Activity: Jump! Run! Dance! An
active lifestyle is a healthy one.
GOOD LUCK -
ENJOY THE GRANNY’S EATING ADVENTURE WITH YOUR BABY!
